Public Full Tt8206668 Bad education. Bad Education is a film based on a true story about a public school system embezzlement scheme. Hugh Jackman plays school superintendent Frank Tassone, ringleader of the scheme, in a rare out-of-this-world acting performance that warrants textbooks being written in film schools about its so good. Jackman elevates an otherwise bland script several notches beyond its potential. Allison Janney as assistant superintendent Pam Gluckin is also superb and Ray Romano as school board lawyer is solid in a supporting role. The film is well-paced, witty, and an easy watch even if the underlying story is a bit shallow. Don't be fooled by the film being classified as a comedy. It is satirical, but not very funny.
Jackman's Tassone is shown wearing expensive suits, grooming his facial hair frequently, and using makeup to keep up public appearances. Beyond that we are never shown what crimes he committed or how he became involved in the scheme. We learn through exposition that he racked up thousands of dollars of dry-cleaning expenses billed to the school. His other crimes are left up to the imagination.
The Pamela Gluckin character's actions are more juicy. She is shown committing blatant improprieties by driving expensive cars, allowing her son to use the school credit card to purchase home renovations, and her daughter purchasing jewelry. That aside, the movie focuses on the cover-up instead of the crimes never bothering to give any backstory.
Romano as the school board's lawyer is a nice touch, although he appears in only a few scenes. The other characters are cannon-fodder. The final sequences are strong, especially the nightclub scene toward the end. The music and crescendo ending feel make you want to re-watch the movie several times.
